Established in 1851 as a railroad depot, the city earned its moniker when rail crews encountered a flint hill and dubbed the spot “Rock Hill.” It went on to serve as a transfer point for Confederate troops and supplies during the Civil War. Once part of South Carolina’s rich textile manufacturing industry, Rock Hill reinvented itself in the new millennium as a sports tourism destination, drawing athletes and spectators from around the world.
The scenic riverfront views along the Catawba River are breathtaking and are home to numerous nature trails, restaurants, and thirty-one parks which are used for both national and local events. Historic downtown consists of 12 contiguous buildings, built as early as 1840, offering a variety of dining and retail options.
Home to 3 colleges, including Winthrop University, a public liberal arts school founded in 1886 with an enrollment of nearly 6,000 students annually. The district operates 27 schools in the city, including 19 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, and 3 high schools with an enrollment of 25,000 students. Religious and charter school options are also available.
